The Key to Big Hair
Today I want to let you in on the secret to big bouncy hair. The first step to achieve it is the Pre-Dry.
If you’re like most you probably flip your head over and just swing their dryer around blowing away looking like you’re in Headbangers Ball rockin’ out to a Pantera jam. While that will get the basic necessity of a rough dry it doesn’t provide you with the desired outcome and benifts of a well executed pre-dry. Achieving this means you get strong root direction resulting in a desirable shape and volume at the root. A skilled stylists can see the root direction and make adjustments where cowlicks are to achieve great results. But you at home can also achieve great results for volume if you use gravity and your finger tips to direct the roots directly off the top of your head (where you want the most volume). Think of directing the roots dorexctyl straight off the scalp so all your hair is standing at attention.
Focus the heat at the root of the hair and not on the ends. You may find that the medium heat setting is sufficient. If your hair is dense or doesn’t dry quickly a hotter setting is the better option. The ends are the most porous and dry the quickest so to achieve shiny ends while gaining volume leave some moisture in the ends and finish them with a boar bristle brush. The most important thing to remember is that you’ll need to get the roots evenly dry and all moving in the same direction. Growth patterns are unique to the individual and generally go in all different directions so getting them to go in the same direction eliminates flat spots and creates that beautiful shape we see on super model blowouts.
Once you achieve an evenly dried root you can flip your head over and move forward with your round brush to finish the style. Remember break things down into easy to work with sections. Proper technique in the finish and attention to the hairline is what sets that at home dry apart from the salon quality blow out. Check back for tips and tricks on how to make get that Supermodel blowout in our next post.
Product Usage: From my experience super fine hair doesn’t always benefit from product as it can weigh it down but for the vast majority of us out there my favorite option is a light weight mousse such as Sachajuan Mousse. For those looking for even greater hold and plump I would go to Oribe Grandiose Mousse. You can use a light weight moisturizer or dry oil for the ends if you are particularly dry. BUT REMEMBER no amount of product is going to fix a split end. the only fix for that is a haircut. Keep up on regular trims if you want beautiful hair.
